Frequently asked questions
- What kinds of image data are supported?
- The JCB DataRollup application supports a large number of different file formats. Immunoblots and autoradiographs in original form are supported as are a variety of proprietary light microscopy file formats. Support is also included for common neutral file formats (i.e, TIFF, JPEG, PNG). Please contact the JCB Editorial Office if you are interested in submitting files in a format that is not on the supported list.
Note that the JCB DataViewer is designed to support viewing of ORIGINAL data that is associated with a published figure. It is not to be used for the final assembled figures.
- How do I upload my data?
- If you indicated during submission of a manuscript to the JCB that you have original data to upload, you will receive an e-mail from the JCB Editorial Office with instructions. Anyone interested in uploading data retrospectively for an article published in the JCB (with a submission date before December 1, 2008), please contact the JCB Editorial Office at jcellbiol@rockefeller.edu, ph: +1-212-327-8581.
- What happens to my data when it is uploaded?
- The original image data is converted to a format that is readable by the JCB DataViewer and then rendered for display. The original data files cannot be directly accessed or downloaded.. Only rendered versions are made available by the JCB DataViewer, according to settings specified by the user. The image viewed within the browser is a compressed JPEG, just like the images published in the electronic form of the Journal.
- How can I change the colors in my uploaded data?
- To change the color channels to match your prepared figures, please follow these step-by-step instructions:
- - For the image in question, open the full viewer
- - Turn on or off the individual channels that you want displayed (by clicking the channel boxes).
- - Click on the 'Rendering details' link on the left hand side
- - To change the color of a channel, click the color box, then choose the correct color. Once all colors are selected, click 'Apply', then 'Save' then 'OK'
- - Repeat for all images.
- - To see the changes reflected in the viewer & and as thumbnails you may need to refresh the page.
- I see an 'Image Import Error' where my figures should be. What do I do now?
- If you just finished uploading your data, there may be a lag as the data are completely imported and rendered for display. Please check again in 15 minutes time. If your data are still not displaying, please contact jcellbiol@rockefeller.edu.
- Are my data secure before publication?
- Yes, the server is SSL-password protected. Only a reviewer with an access key can see the images in a manuscript that is undergoing peer review, and a reviewer can only view rendered versions of the original data from the manuscript s/he is reviewing. Once a manuscript is published, the data are made available to the public on the JCB DataViewer. A link to these data will be inserted in the published article on the JCB web site.
- What happens to my original data files after the manuscript is processed?
- If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the data will be made available to the public and will be accessible from the published article on the JCB website. If the manuscript is rejected, the files will be deleted.
- What do I do if the file format I want to use is not supported?
- If possible, convert the data to a format that is supported. In addition, please contact the JCB Editorial Office if you are interested in submitting files in a format that is not on the supported list.
- Is the use of the images licensed?
- Yes, the use of the images is covered by the license granted by submitting authors during the submission process. As with all JCB content, the copyright to the data remains with the authors, and third parties can reuse the images rendered by the JCB DataViewer under a creative commons license.
- Are these data peer reviewed?
- Data for all articles submitted to the JCB after December 1, 2008 will be peer reviewed. All data for articles submitted before this date were uploaded retrospectively and were not peer reviewed.
- Which browsers does the JCB DataViewer work in?
- The JCB DataViewer has been optimized to work in Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 and higher & Safari.
